Socks are one of those things that are on my (extremely long) to-do list. When a pattern that I really liked appeared in my copy of Simply Knitting I decided that now is the time to have a go. I bought some very expensive but gorgeous Malabrigo sock yarn.
This is the colour. As the socks have a lovely pattern I wanted something plain so as to show this off to it’s best.
When I first cast on I was a little bit worried by how thin the yarn is. I thought that it would take me for ever…..however socks are not that wide and so each round comes around fairly quickly. As mentioned, they are knitted in the round. I have to say that I think that I would probably prefer to use dpn’s, simply because I get really fed up keep having to pull the cable through the socks. Changing needles feels like it would be a lot easier…..
It is upside down – the heel is at the top of the photo. This probably shows 1 and a bit weeks worth of knitting. Last weeks WI was very productive. I learnt about flower arranging whilst knitting! This morning I turned my first ever heel:
It was all done using short rows where you knit only a few of the total number of stitches without casting any off. It is a great technique – really clever. I have done it once before on a jumper but the instructions are really clear and so a complete beginner would be able to do it.
I am hoping that my fast pace continues and I have a completed pair to show you in a couple of weeks? I am only slightly scared that having done one I will think that the challenge is complete and the one will remain single! Do you have any tips to help?

Looking great so far! Unfortunately I don’t have any tips for you as I have only ever made one sock! Like you say, I felt the challenge was over once I had finished one. Maybe we should all keep on at you…..that way you will have no excuse 🙂 x
I think that would work….either that or we combine the odd ones we have for an odd pair! 😉
I love the colour! I never learned to knit and am just learning crochet, as of last Saturday. I’m on dish towels!
Good for you. Crochet is amazing and I love it as well as knitting. Different but equally satisfying.
Thanks for the ‘ping back’. Looking good, that’s a lovely pattern for your first pair of socks. I’m on my 3rd pair which I’ve added a cable pattern to the rib. So far I haven’t suffered from ‘second sock syndrome’ (as I’ve seen it called). Finishing the first one is great but I do find getting going on the second one a bit tedious but once I turn the heel I feel like I’m on the homeward straight. A pair to fit my husband’s size 11 feet felt like they were going on for ever.
Looking forward to seeing the finished article.
Ahh thank you. I am not sure that I would want to knit a pair for my husband. This pattern is great as it is interesting but not that complicated – just about a perfect mix if you ask me but ask me again when I have just started my second!
Never knitted socks I am in awe of people that can control 4 needles at once! Keep going and you will have a nice pair to wear this winter!
Thanks. It is what I am hoping for 🙂
I’ve never knitted much but I can say that, if I put that much time into a pair of socks, I’d NEVER wear them!
LOL but then why knit them? xx
Great color and pattern. Cast on the second one right away. I love to knit socks with Hiya Hiya 9 inch (23 cm) diameter needles, no dpns or magic loop, just round and round we go.
I shall have to keep an eye out for those. They sound like the answer to my problems 🙂
My LYS carries them. Good luck.
Thanks.x
oohh.. love the pattern.. time to keep the cold feet warm.. 😀
Absolutely 🙂
Looks good, very good and the Malabrigo site is full of gorgeousness. If you only finish one sock you could make it into a stylish, regal Christmas stocking, but, as an incentive to complete a pair of socks, how about a sock giveaway, either on your blog or as a fundraiser for something??? Your WI sounds very interesting. How often do you meet?
We meet once a month. We have a good time and do a variety of things. I like your idea of a give away it is just that I think that I want to keep them….. I am such a selfish person ;(
Then, you must imagine how uncomfortable/jealous your unsocked foot will be if you only finish one sock 😀 😀
LOL – could always swap it about….?
YES! Nothing like having a bit of fun with one sock.
🙂
Uhm, four needles for me would be a challenge. I can just about manage two. Love the colour of your wool. Hope you have a good week.
You only use two at a time….. Thanks. x
Loving your yarn. I’ve just discovered it myself. Such lovely colour ways and so soft. So jealous of your sock knitting!!!!! I was going to attempt my first over the Christmas break when all my Christmas makes are out of the way.
I shall be cheering you on, hopefully wearing my PAIR of newly knitted socks. 🙂
Huge fan of using dpns for socks!! My first pair I did the two at a time on circular needles and thought I would never finish. I especially hated all the pulling of the cable through the sock. I thought that made it take much longer. I had almost sworn off socks until one of the ladies in my group begged me to try again with dpns and I have been knitting socks ever since!! Love the color of the yarn!!
Sounds as if we are on the same page when it comes to circulars!
What lovely yarn, and such a pretty colour.
I haven’t read previous comments so someone may have already suggested this but you could always try knitting two socks at the same time xx
I think that that is probably the best option…..next time. x
How about wearing the finished sock and then your other foot will get cold so it will push you along to make the second sock?! Tee hee.
LIKE 🙂
Try to knitt both socks at the same time 🙂
Now that is a good idea :).
Love your single sock and the colour is beautiful! I can only crochet so far, but hope to learn to knit sometime soon. I really want to make a chunky cable knit jumper and most of all SOCKS… I think being able to knit your own socks is totally awesome (maybe I need to get out more?) :o)
Maybe but it is awesome. There are some great crochet sock patterns out there too though…..
God I love Malabrigo. That purple is fantastic. Can’t wait to see the completed sock!
1 down although no photos yet – too dark whenever I think about it!
I have that same problem this time of year. Can’t wait til the days get longer again.
Oh yes 🙂
